Nine years had passed since the day he buried his family but in the earlier days of that time, the estate of his mother and father-in-law had been settled and Billy found himself a very wealthy man. But all the money in the world couldn’t fill the hole in his heart nor stop the resentment toward God from growing deeper. On several occasions, Pastor Singleton had tried to invite him to church but Billy was less than kind to the pastor.

He would often go to the cemetery and sit on the ground in front of Lori’s headstone. His love for her would never end and neither would the torment in his heart. The shiny black granite stone that bore his wife’s name was nothing more than a source of pain. When his aunt would call from Florida to check on him, the conversation would always go back to stories about Lori or his mother. Grief impaled his heart and he lashed out at Sandra. He demanded she stop calling him and refused to answer the phone whenever she did call. He was alone and turning into a miserable human being.

He needed to get away from Sycamore or he would go insane so he contracted a real estate agent to sell everything. Billy kept only the photo albums and presented Tim’s sister Lisa, a check for the proceeds of the sale of her brother’s house. He packed his belongings and moved to Chicago.

Billy purchased a condominium in a secured upscale building near downtown Chicago. The space overlooked Lake Michigan and was perhaps one of the best units in the entire building. He secured a position with an advertising company and soon began to build accounts. His charm, confidence and good looks put potential clients at ease and helped him close many deals that might have otherwise gone astray.

He buried himself in his work because it kept him from dwelling on the loss of his wife. But there were women in the office that reminded him of her. There was no one person that was the complete package, but pieces of Lori’s personality and physical attributes, were found. Loneliness had begun to pull at him like a pack of wolves ripping the flesh of a fresh kill. One evening after a long and difficult day of work, Billy accompanied a young woman from the office to a bar for a drink. After several glasses, Billy escorted her back to his condo. He discovered the intimate company of a woman and alcohol removed the pain from his life. He had become a womanizing man. His office mates seemed to approve of his behavior because when they accompanied him to the taverns and saloons, they too could find themselves nightly companionship. In his professional life, Billy’s confidence, charm and good looks, provided him success and those same attributes awarded him a different woman in his company nearly every night of those last six years.

As was often the situation, Billy and his posse, entered one of the many bars they would frequent.
